Remote Control
Modification
The Roomba remote costs about $15.00 and is
easy to modify, provided your hands don't shake too much...
All that is needed is to open the remote and
solder 4 wires to the spots shown in the figures below.

This modification will allow external relays to
close the circuit (simulate a button being pressed) for the
following remote control functions:
-Forward
-Turn Left
-Turn Right
As you can see in the above picture,
there is some conductive material on top of the solder point for the "Turn
Right" function. You will need to scrape off this conductive
coating, prior to the wire being soldered.
As luck would have it, for the 3 functions
above, all buttons close their contacts to a common point, so we will only
need a wire soldered to the common contact point, and a wire to each of
the other buttons, for a total of 4 wires coming out of the remote
control.
Although a "Reverse" function is
not supported via remote control, it is really not needed, since the
Roomba turns very well on its axis.
You can also add any of the other remote
functions if you would like, such as Power ON/OFF, but we chose to limit
our project to the 3 most basic functions.
